The official definition?
Dramatherapy is a form of active, experiential therapy. It is the intentional use of dramatic (technical) processes borrowed from the theater field, in order to achieve therapeutic goals.
It is part of creative arts therapies, just like: art therapy, music therapy and dance / movement therapy. It is open to all age groups. It can provide the context for participants to tell their stories, to set goals, to solve problems, to express feelings, or to achieve catharsis (purgation / release of emotions). Certain interpersonal skills can also be worked on and improved, under the safe therapeutic alliance created between the drama therapist and his or her client and / or with the help of the group, if there is one.
Through play, action and movement, one's inner experience can be actively and more directly explored. Unlike more conventional talk therapies, where speech takes precedence, here it is rather "action" the modus operendi.
The drama therapist provides a safe space for participants to explore, express themselves, practice spontaneity, the ability to adapt to different life situations and the ability to relate to others. Participants can thus develop at their own pace, a certain flexibility and establish a balance between the different roles (e.g. parent, friend, lover, etc, etc, etc.) that they play in their life. daily.
Do we have to have theater "skills" to undertake a dramatherapy process?
It is NOT necessary to have prior theater knowledge or a special talent to undertake this kind of process. Dramatherapy is NOT about learning drama techniques; it is rather uses its processes for therapeutic purposes. In this sense, the drama therapist is NOT acting as a teacher, but as a therapist. The process is strictly confidential
For who? For which issues?
Client populations can include people of all ages: children, adults, seniors.
All grounds for consultation are possible: mental health issues, depression, professional burnout, anxiety disorders, self-esteem, bipolar disorder, behavioral disorders, personality disorders, gender identity exploration, life transitions, addictions, family or couple dysfunctions, intellectual disabilities, disabilities, physical illnesses with psychological repercussions, survivors of abuse, detainees, homeless people, etc.
* Dramatherapy can be adapted to all types of populations, even when an individual is non-verbal and / or has reduced mobility.
What tools does the drama therapist use?
Through storytelling, projective techniques (puppets, masks, figurines, images, gems, objects, miniature worlds...), deliberate improvisation and performance, participants are invited to rehearse new desired behaviors in their lives. The dramatherapist proposes a series of exercises adapted to the objectives of each one; over the course of the sessions, they can actively become the change they want to be and see in the world. How does a dramatherapy session look like?
The duration of a session varies from 30 to 50 minutes. The participant (s) are invited to start the session with a warm-up period. This is a fun period where we play simple and fun games, in order to focus and leave our "mind" aside to make room for our creativity and our "body" presence. Subsequently, a central period with a precise theme is explored, according to the needs of the participant (s). We end the session with a closing ritual and a discussion / feedback, if necessary.
How many sessions does a dramatherapy process involve?
Each therapeutic process is different. The number of meetings will be established according to the needs and objectives of each participant.
The training of a drama therapist?
In order to be able to practice, a drama therapist must have a university degree at master's level, requiring courses in psychology, theater, drama therapy, as well as practical experience with at least two types of population within internships. supervised. Dramatherapists in Quebec follow the code of ethics of the North American Drama Therapy Association (NADTA).
* There is not yet a Professional Order of "Creative Arts Therapists", here in Quebec, but several people are currently active, so that it is created and that the associated professions are more and more recognized . On a larger scale, as mentioned above, drama therapists can join the North American Drama Therapy Association (NADTA) and thus respect their code of ethics and receive continuing education.
